BMW's Neue Klasse Revolution Begins as First i3 Sedans Roll Off Munich Assembly Line

The first pre-series BMW i3 sedans have been built at the renovated Munich plant, marking a major milestone for BMW's most ambitious platform since the original Neue Klasse of the 1960s. Series production begins in the second half of 2026.

BMW has reached a pivotal moment in its 110-year history. The first pre-series BMW i3 sedans have rolled off the assembly line at the completely renovated Munich plant, signalling that the Neue Klasse era is no longer a concept — it's becoming reality. Series production of the electric sedan is set to begin in the second half of 2026.

A Factory Reborn

BMW has spent 18 months converting roughly one-third of its historic Munich facility — all while keeping existing production running without interruption. The modernisation spans every stage: a new press shop, body shop, state-of-the-art paint shop, assembly area, and completely reworked logistics infrastructure. These early cars are being built using full production processes to stress-test every system before the production lines go live.

The Platform That Changes Everything

The Neue Klasse platform underpinning the i3 delivers generational improvements over BMW's current EV technology. The sixth-generation eDrive system features 800V architecture with silicon carbide semiconductors, delivering 30% faster charging, 30% more range, and 20% better overall efficiency compared to the outgoing Gen5 system. The new cylindrical battery cells offer 20% greater energy density than the prismatic cells used in the current iX, packed directly into the chassis in a cell-to-pack configuration without modular intermediary steps.

Charging performance is equally transformative. The iX3, the first Neue Klasse model already in customer hands, hits 400 kW peak charging power just above 10% state of charge. BMW engineers confirmed the charging curve follows the "cell limit line" — maximum safe current at each point governed entirely by electrochemical physics, not software smoothing.

Panoramic iDrive: A New Interior Philosophy

Inside, the i3 debuts BMW's Panoramic iDrive system, unveiled at CES 2025. The BMW Panoramic Vision projects information across the full width of the windscreen, replacing the traditional instrument cluster. A central touchscreen, new multifunction steering wheel with haptic feedback, and an optional 3D head-up display complete the interface. The system runs on BMW Operating System X, built on AOSP and developed entirely in-house, with an LLM-powered voice assistant that understands natural language commands.

Design: Looking Back to Move Forward

The Neue Klasse design language represents the most radical BMW redesign in modern history. The front fascia reinterprets the iconic kidney grille and headlight arrangement first seen on the 1963 BMW 1800, merging them into a single illuminated graphic unit. The grille is now a "digital icon" featuring lighting elements, 3D geometry, and animated sequences — a dramatic departure from the controversial oversized grilles of recent models.

BMW's Market Dominance Continues

The Neue Klasse launch comes at a time of extraordinary strength for BMW. The brand delivered 2.17 million vehicles globally in 2025, leading the luxury segment for the third consecutive year. In the US alone, BMW sold 388,897 units — a commanding 85,697-unit lead over Mercedes-Benz, which was actually overtaken by Lexus for the second spot. EV sales reached 442,072 units globally, also leading the luxury segment.

The i3 sedan will serve as the electric counterpart to the legendary 3 Series — the nameplate that built BMW's reputation as the maker of the "Ultimate Driving Machine." With a quad-motor, 1,000+ horsepower electric M3 confirmed for 2027, the Neue Klasse era is just getting started.
